Protecting Your Download Pages
Friday, 03 August 2007
The worst nightmare any Internet Marketer dread to experience is to have their precious download pages hacked by unscrupulous people. There is nothing more sickening than having all your hard work creating the product, designing the website, setting up the payment system, generating traffic and promotions completely UNDONE by not securing your download pages.

"Wait a minute. I did secure my download pages by having a hard-to-guess folder location and filename. I have also added some GET parameters in the URLs with long alpha-numeric strings. Did I miss anything?"

Unfortunately, most website owners did miss one vital caveat when securing the download pages. Ignore this simple step and you could have the world's most prolific HACKER at your download page before you can say "uncle".

Here is one more kick in the nuts: The world's most prolific hacker is none other than GOOGLE.

You can stop rubbing your eyes now. This 900 pound behemoth has inadvertently hacked your download page by unleashing their little peons called "spiders" listing the same download page you apparently tried to protect.

Congratulations, your precious download page is now listed in the World's Search Engine for EVERYONE to download.
Cool

Here's a sample screenshot I took on one of my hacking cravings...

"Ok, smarty pants...You've made your point. How do I prevent the spiders from listing my download pages?"

Elementary, my dear Internet-Marketer Watson, just include this tag in the META TAGS of your download page.
<meta name="ROBOTS" content="INDEX,NOFOLLOW"> and the spiders will avoid your download page like a plague.

For those of you who wish to venture into the dark side, here's a good Google Hacking book to read to get back at Google for cancelling your google adsense account.
